Given the continuous development of social economy, there is an increase in people demanding architecture. Some of the most advanced design concepts are starting to be applied directly to the design of buildings. Take for example sustainable development, where building integration design plays a crucial role in promoting the rapid development of architectural design.
By essence, there are a lot of things going on in an architectural project. The design perspective, in particular, is just one of them. Regardless, each of them has been carefully thought and planned in order to guarantee safety and comfort on a day to day basis. But what exactly is architectural design and how do architectural designers go by it? If anything, what elements are involved during the design process?
In a nutshell, here is everything you need to know about Architectural Design
Basically, architectural design is a concept in the world of architecture. But unlike its contemporaries, it heavily focuses on components or elements pertaining to a certain structure. As expected, it is the architect or architectural designer who is going to be generally in charge of the overall architectural design. This professional is well-versed in working with elements and space in an attempt to create a structure that is both coherent and functional.
What Architectural Designers Do?
So, what do architectural designers do? What merits can they offer in the world of architectural design?
It is worth noting that not every individual who designs structures must necessarily be deemed an architect. As a matter of fact, not even everyone who is able to complete and obtain a degree in architecture shall be called one. That is because some of them who hold either a bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture and design buildings are actually architectural designers.
These professionals, in one way or another, are like entry-level employees, though the main difference is that they work in architectural firms. And very much like an architect, they are responsible for designing a variety of structures, not to mention the different types involved. Why not? They hold professional certification after all.
But before their designs can be implemented or use, a supervising architect needs to sign them off. Apart from helping in the overall architectural design, they are also responsible for providing support when it comes to the logistics of turning a design into reality. Not only do they shepherd their way through a city permitting process, but they also involved themselves in the creation of digital plans heavily based on architectural sketches. Lastly, they are in charge of overseeing contractors, visiting constructions sites, or facilitating communication with consultants, among other tasks.
Much like the Modern and Contemporary interior designers, simplicity reigns. The drawings on walls and no reliefs embedded in the structures, the Art Nouveau movement was a prime example of good interior designing. More so are the solid murals or bold, bright mosaics, linear art patterned rugs and furnishings curved and touched with a hint of metal or wood, they all are intricately defined. Read more
What is involved in the Overall Design Process?
Now that you know what architectural design is and the difference between an architectural designer and architect, it is time to learn about the different things involved in the overall design process. This is, after all, the most significant part of the article.
In a nutshell, there are several steps involved in the goal of designing a process intended for an architectural project. All of these steps are crucial, as they contribute to the overall feel, look, and safety of the project.
The steps are the following:
Schematic Design – This one right here is the very first step. It is where the architect starts gathering information based on style, needs, or wants for the project. From there, he will start creating a series of design options for the client to check and review.
Design Development – When it comes to the design development, the architect will take the schematic designs from the aforementioned step in order to turn them into a reality. This is basically where the birth of an approved designed concept takes place. If there are changes to the said design, the client must be provided with a line of communication to the architect, so the process is consolidated and transparent.
Construction Documents – Construction documents are expected to be provided to a contractor for the purpose of constructing the project. This is also where all drawings will be put together by the alongside tons of detail on them, allowing the contractors or clients to follow when the building proceeds.
Bidding – As you already know, this step is where a contractor is being sought after for the project.
Construction – Construction may only start once a contractor is selected and, more importantly, the design concept is finalized.
